Masterclass: Open Source Intelligence and advanced research tools

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

The set-out for investigative journalism is finding and verifying information – and this day is all about making that easier and more efficient. You will learn new methods and tools and also how to go deeper and more thoroughly into the sources, using the techniques you already know.
You will get new skills in your online search and get tips on new spaces to explore in the deep web or in the world of databases - for example which advanced operators work best on which search engines. And we will have a friendly test of each other’s OSINT skills.

Program:

10-12.45: The everyday OSINT toolbox:
In this part of the masterclass you will learn and practice the use of some of the most common tools and cases to take advantage of open-source intelligence in journalism. We will show how to track vessels, planes, and people, show how to verify images/video footage, show how to track money flow or how to best employ satellite data in the most common of investigations: In show: how to use the most common OSINT frameworks and code basis that I often use in my work. Every case will be underlined by real life examples. Ben Heubl and Max Bernhard.

12:45-13:30: Lunch break

13:30-16 - Search engines debunked
Everyone uses search engines every day, mostly the one with "G". There is no valid test that proves which search engines deliver the best results.
Search engines have "operators" or simply commands that you can give them. But which ones are they exactly and where do they work best? Albrecht Ude found all the "advanced operators", then tried them out on each and every search engine to see if and how well they worked. Bing, DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, Google, Metager, Qwant, Startpage and Yandex were examined. You can now benefit from his hard work. Albrecht Ude.
