Hi there! My name is Maike and I'm a freelance journalism consultant and media innovator from the Netherlands. With a background in Communication Science, I've worked in journalism for almost 15 years. At the Dutch public service broadcaster NOS I've done projects on strategy, innovation and format development. My main achievement was the extensive research I did into the motivations people have to consume news, which resulted in the book News Needs. Under the name BureauMaike I now develop new (media/journalism) concepts, give strategic advise based on audience insights and help with the implementation of projects. As the treasurer for the Dutch Journalism Foundation, I support the infrastructure and innovation of journalism in the Netherlands.
In all that I do, I try to bring analysis, creativity and functionality together. I believe in simplicity and clarity and try to develop clear concepts that might be ingenious, but are easy to explain. The end user plays a key role in my work, as I believe that they should be the focus for any media professional. After all, they’re the ones we’re doing it for.
